ABDOMINOPLASTY (TUMMY TUCK)

How long will the operation take?
Between 2-3 hours

Will I need a general anaesthetic?
Yes, you will be asleep for the surgery

How many nights will I have to be in hospital? 
You will be in hospital for 1 night after the surgery

Will it be painful afterwards and how long do I have to have off work? 
You will receive painkillers in hospital and after discharge to control the pain. Most people take 2 – 3 weeks off work, but you may need longer if you have a job which requires heavy lifting.

What should I avoid after the operation?
Avoid exercise until 4 weeks post op. Start gently and gradually increase activity. Avoid exercises directly focused on abdominal muscles (like crunches/ situps) for 12 weeks.

What are the risks of the operation? 
Any operation carries some risks. Bruising, swelling, temporary fluid collection, numbness, asymmetry are common. Infection, bad scarring, extra skin at the ends of the scar, irregularity, delayed healing, tethering of the scar are uncommon.

When will I need appointments after the operation?
Review at any time if you have any concerns. Routinely at 1 week, 3 months. Scar continue to improve over 18 months.

You will be in hospital for the day, or sometimes overnight.

What should I avoid after the operation?
Gentle exercise from 2 weeks after the operation, then full activity from 4 weeks after the operation. Start gently and gradually increase activity.

What are the risks of the operation?
Any operation carries some risks. Bruising, swelling are usual and last from 3 – 10 days. Temporary numbness and skin irregularity are common. Permanent numbness, infection, bad scarring, irregularity and over / under correction are uncommon.

You will receive painkillers in hospital and after discharge to control the pain. Most people take 2-3 weeks off work, but you may need longer.

What should I avoid after the operation?
You can walk straight after the surgery and do gentle exercise after 4 weeks. You should avoid heavy lifting and strenuous activity for 6 weeks after surgery.

What are the risks of the operation?
Any operation carries some risks. Bruising, swelling are usual and last from 3 – 10 days. Temporary numbness and skin irregularity are common. Permanent numbness, infection, bad scarring, irregularity and fluid collections are uncommon. The scars can stretch slightly after the surgery. Due to the location of the surgery and the tightness required, there is often a feeling of tightness and pulling. Delayed healing and swelling are more common after this surgery than in other body treatments.

Yes, you will be asleep for the surgery and local anaesthetic is used whilst you are asleep, so you are comfortable when you wake up.
